How to Hang/Mount Air-filled Balloons

Modified on Mon, 15 Aug, 2022 at 5:25 PM

Setting up air-filled latex and foil balloons requires more time than helium-filled balloons because decorators must find creative ways to suspend balloons from ceilings or mount them to walls.

A lot of decorators use 3M hooks or use adhesives such as balloon tape, scotch tape, glue dots, or double-sided adhesive. Manufacturers created removable glue dots and double-sided adhesives to keep balloons mounted to the walls but these products work best when mounting single balloons on the wall.

Mounting Balloon Clusters to a Wall

  • The balloons should be strung together using a monofilament line, ribbon, or string because the weight of all the balloons will be too heavy to be supported by simple adhesives.
  • Some 3M command hooks can mount clusters up to 5 lbs.
  • When stringing the monofilament line through the balloons, make sure to leave enough string to tie around the command hook.
  • Use Hang Tabs to attach balloons to the ceiling's hooks or beams when hanging foil balloons.
  • Cable ties can be used when mounting balloons onto support structures such as a metal-framed backdrop by tying the cable tie around the monofilament line and attaching it to the metal frame. The balloons will be secure and will not move once the cable tie is locked in.

Hanging Balloon Banners

  • Use a strong adhesive like Gaffer's Tape to secure the monofilament line to the wall when hanging a latex balloon banner across the center of a room.
  •  All balloons should be tied to the line before hanging up a latex balloon banner going from one wall to another.
  • Packaged balloon scripts include a string that can be taped to the wall.
  • The larger the balloons are the stronger and more durable the string should be.

Design Tip

  • If a ribbon is being used as the line, match the color to the balloons so that it is not visible.
